Shortcut {Book Linky} & Two for Tuesday

I am linking up with Deanna Jump for her Let's Talk About Books linky.  The idea is to introduce each other to different books.
The book I am going to share about is called Shortcut by Donald Crews.  I have had this book for a while from back when I taught first but only just realized this year how powerful it is as a mentor text for writing.
The book is fairly short and simple.  It has lots of great pictures and the kids (especially the boys) really get into it.  Basically there are some kids who need to get home before dark so they decide to take the shortcut down the railroad track, rather than the road, home because it's faster.
The kids know exactly what might happen, so they spend the whole book wondering if the kids are going to come face to face with a train.
The book offers little hints along the way that a train is coming using both images and sound words (that become larger as the train becomes closer) on the pages.

The book is perfect for teaching kids how to write in detail about a small moment as well as for using voice/word choice in writing because of the way the author is able to create such emotion for the reader.
I am also linking up with The Teaching Tribune for Two for Tuesday.  I've noticed a lot of people have already been purchasing classroom decor products in order to prep for next year, so I've decided to put two types of products on sale for 50% off today instead of two individual products.

ALL of my editable word walls and ALL of my editable labels/name tags are 50% off for today only!  Each product comes in a variety of colors sure to match your room, so make sure to check them out.
My word walls contain all of the Dolch words as well as EDITABLE pages for you to add your own.  They are available in over 15 colors and only $1.50 today.  Check them all out here.
My labels/name tags are completely editable so that you can type whatever you want on them in order to organize your classroom!  They are available in over 15 colors and only $0.50 today.  Check them all out here.

  1. Shortcut is one of my favorite books for teaching small moments. Your labels look great!

  2. I use Shortcut in WW, too. I just purchased a set of your word cards. I got a set from someone else last year which ended up not being editable :( I hope I can set up a moveable word wall this year as I planned. Thanks for the post.
