Just stopping in for a brief moment...I've been at a training all week that requires homework! Huh?! It's a really good training though, so it's okay.
Anyways, I have a question. I am moving into a new classroom...literally it was just built...but it has no bulletin boards or hooks for student backpacks. The two closets that are there are full of little shelves.
So, does anyone else lack hooks or closet space for student backpacks? What solutions have you come up with? I'm not sure what to search for on Pinterest!
Since they're brand new rooms, I'm thinking drilling hooks into the wall isn't going to be an option. Thanks for your help!

My kids put their backpacks along the wall of the closet on the floor.
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who moved into the portable and used rubber maid containers that I had that I wasn't using she had 5 tubs for her 5 teams and they all had their own tub to put their backpack in so they knew where to find it.

Command hooks? Is there a wall you could line the hooks up on?

I was also thinking that 3M command hooks would work if you have the room. Maybe you could put the hooks on the side of their desk if you don't have the wall space.
ReplyDeleteLet us know what you end up doing. I am very curious to see what you decide to do.

I used those round tubs with the rope handles. I had 5 of them (2 girls, 2 boys, and lunches). We kept them in the hallway. My friend used command hooks but they ripped the wall and were pulled off paint and Sheetrock and all.
ReplyDeleteMy kids (31 2nd graders) put them on the backs of their chairs. Not my favorite but that is what we do. When I had 20 kids I was able to set something up in every room I was in, but I haven't found a solution yet for 31 -- would love to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I guess that's something I take for granted! I've never not had hooks for backpacks! One teacher had to use the music room (no hooks), but they borrowed or bought rolling coat racks. For lunches, we'd put them in big RubberMaid bins.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!

laundry baskets with table numbers on them. The baskets are lined up against the wall and students just store them there. The numbers make it less confusing for the students to find the backpacks.

I like the command hook idea, I have used those and they work great! No bulletin boards either? I have had a few rooms without bulletin boards and I just put contact paper straight on the wall and frame it with tape or a border. Presto! A pretend bulletin board that doesn't damage the wall! :)

What about an old fashion coat rack? It would be fairly easy to make. Just make the base thick/wide enough so it wouldn't tip over.
ReplyDeleteI used laundry baskets to hold backpacks when my school went through a no backpacks in the hallway year or two. It did take up some room but it also sped up the dismissal process a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar situation. I moved to a different school and my classroom has hooks for 14. I will have 25 kids. I think I might do big bins for each group- and just use the cupboard space for more storage! I would like to know what you decide to do!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if your classroom would allow for this but Mrs. Olson zip tied crates together and stacked them on top of one another. Check it out at http://mrseolson.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html?m=0

I use big plastic bins or have the kids put them on the back of their chairs.

I used two large Rubbermaid totes; one for boys and one for girls. Lunches went in a flexible laundry basket. Only downside, the kids thought they could sit on the edge of the totes, so they are cracked. We've looked into a free standing backpack rack, but they are EXPENSIVE.
