SS Mentor Text & Blogging Buddies Shout Out

Yay for a three day weekend and only 8 more weeks of school!

The theme is Social Studies for this week's mentor text linky with Collaboration Cuties.

We have a bunch of new social studies standards related to how science and technology have changed the ways that people meet their basic needs, as well as identifying individuals who have contributed to society by displaying "inventiveness."  Since students are also supposed to be familiar with chronology words, such as past, present, and future, this story is perfect:

It is actually in our reading basal, which is set up a bit differently than the images on Amazon.  I imagine it is to make the book take up less pages.  The book follows the theme of the title and shows an invention "now" and "Ben" (a play on "now and then").  It gives a description and picture of an object we use now, such as flippers, electricity, chairs, even hospitals and then shows the same thing in Ben Franklin's time and alludes to him having originally played a part in the invention of all these things.

The kids actually love the story, although since I don't teach Social Studies, we didn't read it this year.  It is great for comparing and contrasting though, as each item is different now than when it was originally invented.  I've also had them choose an item before ad draw/describe it in the past (in book), present (in the book), and the future (from their mind).

I also wanted to give a shout out to two blogging buddies that I have enjoyed following.  Please check them out!

First, Joanne from Head Over Heels for Teaching.  She has great ideas and sponsors a Spark Motivation Saturday linky each week which is full of all kinds of creative ways to keep your kids engaged.  She is also very sweet and I can always count on her to respond to any comments and/or questions!

I just started following Pinkadots Elementary.  (Apparently I mostly enjoy following fourth grade bloggers!)  I immediately had a connection with them because I used to teach in Connecticut and miss my home!  But, they are hosting a New Year, New Gear linky, created a great calendar of all the linky parties that have been going on, and so I look forward to seeing more from them!
